What is the merit makan challenge?
I aim to create an environment in the classroom where there is a love of learning for its own sake. Nevertheless, to help provide a behavioural framework, I also run a merit makan challenge which aims to encourage good learning behaviors, initiative and effort. In the second and third terms students are given specific individual criteria of what they will be rewarded on. For example students with more significant EAL needs will be rewarded for checking their verb tenses when writing, whilst more advanced learners may be challenged to provide more explanation behind their verbal answers.

The merit makan involves each member of the class being given merits (plus points) for positive work and behaviour and demerits (negative points) for things like incomplete work and unsatisfactory effort. Each member is in a group and at the end of the term the team and individual with the highest score is rewarded with a makan (the malay word for feast/eat). The groups change each term.

The merit makan challenge also links into the middle school reward programme at KTJ. For every two merit points a sticker is awarded in the student's planner. These stickers go to the termly nominations and the chance of winning a grand prize.
